The Von-der-Heydt Museum in Elberfeld, Wuppertal, is one of the finest galleries of 19th- and 20th century art in Germany. It is located in the remains of the town’s neo-Renaissance Rathaus (Town Hall). Artists on display here include Max Beckmann, Carl Spitzweg, Manet, Schlemmer and a large collection of local artist Hans von Marées – regarded as one of Germany’s most distinctive painters, using Italianate influences and dark palettes. The museum is open most days of the week for a small entrance fee.
