Schloss Waldeck is a medieval fortress situated high on a rocky outcrop above the town of Waldeck, and 120 metres above the Edersee lake. It was built in the 12th century as a residence for the Counts of Waldeck. From 1734 to 1868 it was used as a barracks, and from 1920 a women’s prison. Today the castle is operated as a hotel. However, visitors can also enjoy the fine restaurant, and the small museum which tells the history of the building. The castle has fantastic views over the lake and town.
