The Heidenmauer, or Heathens’ Wall, is all that remains of Wiesbaden’s once strong Roman fortress. It is the oldest surviving Roman structure in the town, and once guarded it from attack by Germanic tribes. The structure dates from 364-375AD, and only parts of the wall remain today. Next to it is the Römertor, or Roman Gateway, built in 1902 with its wooden bridge. An open-air museum displaying the Roman history of Wiesbaden and many finds is located here.
