The Johanniskirche in central Verden is one of the town’s three main churches. It is a large Gothic hall church which has been adapted from its original Romanesque brick structure. It was built in 1150, and changed into its current form around the 15th century. This makes it the oldest brick church in northern Germany. Inside you will see many medieval frescoes along the walls – most notable being one entitled The Last Judgement. The church is still very much in use, with a thriving congregation.
