The Heiligen Geist Spital in Wismar is the Holy Spirit Hospital. This ranks as one of Germany’s best preserved old hospitals, standing wonderfully restored. It was built as a Gothic structure in the 15th century, and remodelled in a Renaissance style in the 16th century. It was a place for the sick and frail to get medical attention and assistance. The church of the building has wonderful frescoes of Old Testament scenes on its ceiling. There is also a garden and inner courtyard worth seeing. Visitors are permitted to look round after the Sunday church service for a small donation.
