The Gewandhaus is a fantastic Renaissance building in the centre of Zwickau. It was formerly the cloth house – home of the Drapers’ Guild, built in 1522 when the cloth industry was large here. From 1812 the building was divided into two large halls, with the larger of the two opening as a theatre in 1823. It was converted into one large theatre later, and again refurbished in the 20th century after World War 2 damage. Today various plays and concerts are held here, and in the smaller Puppentheatre.
