Blankenhain Castle was built originally in the 12th century. After most of it burnt down in 1661, it was rebuilt around 1700. It gained a Baroque style during this rebuild, along with a mansard roof and ornate domed towers. After serving as a private residence for many years, it was converted into a museum in 1981. Blankenheim is now the open air museum of agriculture and rural life in central Germany, covering the period of 1890 to 1990. Its 11 hectares, lake and 60 buildings make impressive grounds to wander.
