The Zahnradbahn in southern Stuttgart is an innovative rack railway which takes passengers up a steep incline to the Degerloch suburb from Marienplatz. Although modern variations of trams operate on the railway today, it was actually built in 1884 and rises 205 metres in its 2.2 kilometre length. This railway is an important link in the public transport system for locals, but it also provides great views for visitors who come to ride it. A ticket must be purchased to ride.
