St. Wolfgang’s Church in Schneeberg is one of the largest late Gothic reformation era churches in Germany. It was built between 1516 and 1540. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1719, and again after bombing in World War 2. Inside, the altar is one of the most important works of art in Saxony. It was built by Lucas Cranach the Elder in 1539. Curiously, the altar was stolen in 1633, but later returned, and miraculously survived the fire and bombing. The organ is also of note, being one of the most modern in Germany. It was built in 1998.
