The St. Johann Basilica was constructed between 1754 and 1758, designed by Friedrich-Joachim Stengel. It is a lovely little baroque church with an ornate interior, and a bronze entrance area designed by a local artist. The church’s organ is also noteworthy in that it is made up of two individual parts, with 60 stops and 4,312 pipes. The interior was partly destroyed during the French revolution, but was painstakingly restored in the 18th century. The pope granted this church the status of ‘Minor Basilica’.
