Saarbrücken Zoo can be found to the east of St. Johann. It was founded in 1932 in a former sandstone quarry and today houses 1,000 animals of around 200 species. Some of the species are quite rare, including Malayan bears, echidnas, aardvarks, drills, and one of the best collections of lemurs in Europe. Special displays include the African House and the Nocturnal House. The zoo is open daily throughout the year, and guided tours can be undertaken.
