Hauptmarkt is the main market square in Trier, located in the centre of the old town (Altstadt). This beautiful square came into existence around the 10th century and is one of the most attractive of its kind in Germany. There is a market cross in the centre on a Roman column, which is a copy of the original. This feature is as old as the square itself. St. Peter’s fountain can be found in the southern part of the square, which was built in 1595. The former Steipe guesthouse, with a steep gabled roof, stands on the western side. It dates from the 15th century. Germany’s oldest pharmacy (apotheke) also stands on the southern side, dating to the 13th century.
