The Gothic Liebfrauenkirche in Trier is built alongside the Dom cathedral of St. Peter. It was built between 1235 and 1260, and is thus one of the oldest Gothic churches in Germany. Inside there are many relics and wall paintings, dating back to the 15th century – many adorn 12 columns, symbolising the 12 apostles. Tombs inside include those of Karl von Metternich from Trier, who died in 1636. The church is built roughly in the shape of a Greek orthodox cross and has a tower rising in the centre
