The old bridge, or Alte Brücke, in Saarbrücken was erected in 1546 by Charles V to connect Alt-Saarbrücken with St. Johann. Today the structure (which is one of the oldest in the city) is reduced in size, with only 7 of the original 13 arches remaining. Sadly it was bombed during World War 2 and rebuilt shortly after. However, its shorter length came about in the 1960s to make room for a new roadway through the city. Those wishing to take a summer boar ride on the river can board one at the old bridge.
