Minden is most famous for being at the heart of the German waterway transport system. Here the Mittlellandkanal and the rivers Weser, Rhine and Elbe all meet. The Wasserstrassenkreuz, or Waterway Junction, is unique in Europe and allows boat traffic to transfer from canal to either river, or vice versa, and also to pass by without interfering or changing the flow. The Canal Bridges, built in 1914 and 1998, are 375 metre aerial flyovers, allowing the canal to pass overhead the River Weser. A great lock, which transfers ships between river and canal, named the Schachtschleuse, can move 12,000 cubic metres of water. There is an exhibition hall here to explain the workings to visitors.
