One of the best attractions of Neubrandenburg is its city wall fortifications, or Stadtmauer. It is one of the best-preserved and largest examples in Europe, stretching over 2 kilometres around the old town. Despite heavy bombing in the town during World War 2, the walls remained intact. Many of the original 56 towers on the walls have been converted into houses, which give the stadtmauer an unusual appearance in places. Some are open to the public with collections and workshops. The four large towers are the Friedlander Tor, Treptower Tor, Stargarder Tor and Neuse Tor.
