St. Augustine’s Church in Mainz is a Baroque buildings in the centre of the old town (altstadt). It was built in 1768 close to an Augustinian monastery which dated from 1260. The entrance to the church is bold, built of red sandstone. Inside the church is ornately decorated with rich furnishings by Bavarian artists. Also to be found inside is the last organ built by Johann Heinrich Stumm, in 1773, and a lime wood sculpture of Mary with Baby Jesus. Luckily St. Augustine’s escaped any significant damage in World War 2, so it stands as a reminder of the old Mainz.
