Schloss Nymphenburg was built as the summer home for the Wittelsbachs away from the city centre of Munich. This is a grand palace with extensive gardens and grounds which contain lawns, ponds, pavilions and fountains. The palace dates from 1662, growing from a small villa into the imposing residence of today as successive rulers added their own mark on the building. The palace is open to visitors daily. Inside you will find a wonderful banqueting hall, stuccoes and frescoed ceilings. The Gallery of Beautiful Women can be found in one pavilion, containing portraits commissioned by Ludwig I. There is also a collection of state coronation coaches, and the Royal Porcelain Factory.
