The Kurfürstliches Schloss, or Elector’s Castle, in Mainz is a wonderful Baroque palace in the centre of the city which dates from a building period of 1627-1776. Its purpose was to house the archbishops of Mainz, who previously lived at the Martinsdom cathedral. Today the palace houses the Roman and Germanic History Museum which has gained a favourable reputation. It houses the preserved ‘ice man’ from South Tyrol. There are many other finds on display from the Stone Age and Middle Ages, covering the whole Roman period.
