The Renaissance castle in Oldenburg dates back to the 7th century. Today it houses the Landesmuseum for art and culture, one of the northernmost in Germany. In its collections are large arrays of paintings, many by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm – a friend of Goethe’s – who was resident in the Oldenburg court from 1804. There are also some period rooms on display.
