The Neue Pinakothek was originally founded by Ludwig I opposite the Alte Pinakothek to house his collection of contemporary art. Bombing in World War 2 destroyed the building, however, and it was chosen to rebuild at a much later date – re-opening its doors in 1981. The collections still remain contemporary, with sculptures and art from the 18th to 20th centuries. Artists on show include Caspar David and Gustav Klimt, alongside international impressionist artists Cézanne, Degas, Monet and Renoir.
