Situated in Mettmann, which is in the Neanderthal valley, near Dusseldorf, the Neanderthal Museum traces the story of humankind from Africa to the present. As the name suggests, the emphasis is on Neanderthal man since the remains of strange ape-like creatures were found in a cave nearby. The museum features exhibits, skeletal remains, and lots of reconstructions and historical information. There is a shop. The museum is open most days, and an admission fee is charged.
