Just to the north of the Dom in Paderborn is the Ottonische Kaiserpfalz, which dates from 1000AD, although it was destroyed in 1165. Excavated in the 20th century, this former royal palace was reconstructed in 1976 exactly as it was. The original remains of the palace’s chapel – the Bartholomäuskapelle – lie near the entrance, and claim to be the first example of a hall church in Germany, with a smart interior. The palace now houses the archaeology museum for the region in its halls and rooms, covering many of the finds in and around Paderborn.
