Mainz’s Museum for Ancient Shipbuilding is a large area dedicated to displaying the remains of ancient ships and informative displays about shipbuilding. It is located inside the former market hall in the old town. Originally part of the Roman and Germanic History Museum, it has been independent since 1994. Its collection is unrivalled anywhere and includes five ships dating back to 407AD, abandoned following the defeat of the Romans in Mainz. Many other full-scale models of historic boats are also on display.
