Möhnesee is a town, and a large lake, in the Sauerland area of Germany. The lake is formed by a huge dam, and was made famous during World War 2 when the “dambusters” breached the damn causing widespread devastation with their bouncing bombs. The dam dates from 1908-12 and today is full operational again. It proves a big draw for recreation, with sailing and fishing both being popular. The town has all the usual amenities, and plenty of places to stay for visitors escaping to the countryside.
