Martinsdom cathedral in Mainz is a wonderfully large red sandstone structure which dominates the city, and has a tower which can be seen all around the surrounding streets. Building work on the cathedral began in 975, modelling it on the old St. Peter’s in Rome. However, it was consumed by fire before its consecration in 1009. It was 1036 that it reopened. Seven coronations took place in Mainz dom, and there are tombs inside of many former archbishops. Of note are the bronze doors and the leaves of the market portals, dating to 1009. Inside there are three naves and numerous smaller chapels.
