Marienplatz is the central focal point of Munich. Originally a wheat market was held here, as well as numerous public executions of criminals. Duke Wilhelm V married Renata of Lorraine in the square in 1568. Today the square is a meeting place and a central transport hub. Above ground cafes line the pedestrian area, offering a pleasant place to sit and people-watch. Below ground the S-Bahn and U-Bahn train systems meet, bringing travellers from all over the city. In the square you will find the Column of the Virgin Mary (Mariensäule) erected in 1638, and also the 19th century Fischbrunnen monument from which young butchers would leap into the fountain at the end of their apprentisceship.
