The Maria Laach Abbey is a fine example of German and European Romanesque architecture. It is built alongside the volcanic crater of the Laacher See lake. The abbey was built from 1093 under orders by Heinrich II. Completed in 1220, the Benedictine monks ran the site until secularisation in 1802. From 1892 monks moved back in to occupy the site. Today visitors can come and look around the wonderful church, with its cloisters towers, mosaics, stained glass windows, high altar and crypt. Heinrich II is buried here, with a magnificent tomb dating to his death in 1095. A wonderful sight.
