When the landgraves settled in Marburg after Hesse broke away from Thuringia in the 10th century, they set up home in their new castle in the town. The Landgrafenschloss, or Landgraves Castle, towers over the town and was built in stages between the 10th and 16th centuries. It is an impressive set of buildings. Amongst these, the ducal chamber from 1330 is impressive. Visitors can enter the castle and see some of the rooms and buildings which were restored in the late 1990s.
