Königsplatz was devised by crown prince Ludwig I, who seemingly avoided all town planning convention by placing this square in a place that was not the convergence of any roads. He envisioned grand Classical temples surrounding the square and soon had his men working on widening the roads leading up to it. Königsplatz became a square covered in grass and lined with trees. However, Hitler changed the face of the square during his reign, removing the trees and laying concrete for his troops and vehicles. Since the war, the square has been returned to its tranquil, grass covered state, surrounded by some interesting buildings and museums.
