Kloster Altenburg is a Cistercian monastery set in a wooded valley on the River Dhün, 15km north east of Cologne. The grand Gothic church was begun in 1255, taking just over 100 years to complete. The building is devoid of ornate decor both inside and out, yet its scale and harmonious design, coupled with the landscape, make it a very attractive and photogenic building. The façade window is the largest in Germany, depicting The Heavenly Jerusalem, with other attractive stained glass windows adorning the church also. Curiously, both Catholic and Protestant services are held here, which are popular on Sundays. It is sometimes referred to as Bergischer Dom and is easily reached by public transport from Cologne.
