The Hofbräuhaus is a Munich institution. The former Royal Brewery has existed here since 1644, founded originally by Duke Wilhelm V to avoid paying import taxes on beer. Beer replaced wine as the staple alcoholic drink in Bavaria after the crops in the vineyards were repeatedly destroyed by harsh winters, and it has stayed that way ever since. The current Hofbräuhaus building dates from 1896. Inside you will find beer, food, traditional music, long wooden tables and lederhosen – and plenty of tourists, as this is one of Munich’s most visited attractions.
