The Glyptothek was the first building on Königsplatz built by Ludwig I for a public museum purpose – specifically for his collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. The building is huge and fronted by Ionic columns. In the collections are many important works, but perhaps the most important is the sculpture from the gables of the Temple of Aphaia on Aegina island, dating from as far back as 485BC.
