The English Garden was opened in 1789, the brainchild of an American known locally as Count Rumford. The huge park stretches 3 miles to the north of the city and incorporates a number of pleasant landscaped areas and monuments. Much inspiration was taken from traditional English gardens, with nods to London’s Kew Gardens. The park is popular with nudists, who enjoy laying out in sunny weather alongside the Eisbach stream running through the park. Visitors can also find a boating lake, love temple, Chinese Tower, Japanese Tea House, beer garden and a boating pond with a café. The view of the city from the Chinese Temple is particularly good.
