The Dom, or Cathedral, in Paderborn, was constructed in the 13th century. A church was built on the site at the request of Charlemagne when Pope Leo was due to visit. Today’s huge Gothic hall church, shows some reminders of the earlier building. It has a monumental, copper tipped tower with slit windows, and an entranceway with French figures. Many of the sculptures inside date from the 17th century, carved by Heinrich Gröninger – the most important of which is the monument to Dietrich von Fürstenberg. In the cloister gardens, with windows showing one-eared hares running in a circle. Inside also are a 15th century Gothic high altar and a Double Madonna from 1480.
