Christ Church in Mainz is one of the dominating features of the skyline, located on the border between the old and new town areas. It is a proud Protestant church in High Renaissance style, which was built in 1895 to counter the dominance of the Martinsdom Catholic cathedral. Its dome is the dominant feature of the building, made of copper and standing 80 metres above ground. The church was badly damaged in World War 2, with reconstruction starting in 1952.
