Looming over the town of Landshut in Bavaria is the Trausnitz Castle. This ‘Burg’ was built from 1204 by the Wittelsbachs as a home. The dukes of Lower Bavaria lived here from 1255 to 1503 under the rule of the Wittelsbachs. The building features a tall tower dominating the structure. Other notable features are the chapel with its fine altars and sculptures, the paintings on the Fools’ Staircase, and the castle courtyard with its arcades. Visitors are permitted to look around the building and its restored rooms, which feature original furniture, tapestries and household items. There is also a chamber of art with 750 pieces in the collection.
