Lutherstadt Wittenberg’s wonderful Rathaus, or Town Hall, is a Renaissance building set on the Market Square. The building was constructed between 1523 and 1535, but was later expanded on two occasions in the 16th century. In front of the hall are two monuments erected in the 19th century – one to Martin Luther, and one to Philipp Melanchthon. The Market Square is a pleasant place to visit, with outdoor cafes and bars, and small shops. The buildings surrounding it are of historical value, and largely Renaissance in style.
