Schloss Wittenberg is a large palace built for Frederick the Wise, and between 1489 and 1525 was modernised extensively following a fire and damage during the Seven Years War. Although its Gothic façade was largely lost, it still retains its iconic tower and elements of décor such as coats of arms. Today the structure houses the Museum of Natural History and Ethnography in its west wing. It houses the private collection of Berlin glove manufacturer Julius Riemer. Exhibits include large numbers of domestic and exotic animal species and information on their history. Another department charts human history in place like Egypt, Australia and Japan.
