The Rhein Museum is located at the Festung Ehrenbreitstein fortress in Koblenz, which overlooks the River Rhine. It was opened in 1912 to present information and history of water navigation, ecology, hydrology and the romance and tourism of the River Rhine – particularly in this part of its course, between Mainz and Cologne. It covers the development of fishing, the folklore and legends of the river, the emergence of tourism on the Rhine, and the industry on the river. Many items are on display – most notably a model of the river and its workings.
