Lemgo’s Market Square, or Markt, is a wonderful area of preserved and original houses and buildings dating back to the 14th century. These include the Rathaus (Town Hall) buildings which are a favourite photo spot for tourists, comprising many different styles of buildings linked together. An old pharmacy (Apothekenerker) still operates, and on the south side is the 16th century Zeughaus and 17th century Ballhaus. As a contrast, two buildings of the 1970s can also be found here, but both are prize winning Modernist buildings, with designs of Lemgo’s past on their exteriors.
