The Kunsthalle Fridericianum is a Neo-Classical building built between 1769 and 1776 by du Ry. It is located off Friedrichsplatz, one of the best squares in Kassel. The building was constructed with the intention of becoming a museum. In actual fact, it was the second public museum opened in Europe, after London’s British Museum. The museum displays all kinds of art, and since 1955 has been home to the Documenta multimedia contemporary art show. The museum has also over spilled into the nearby Staatstheater, with a second exhibition hall.
