The Hexenbürgermeisterhaus, or Witches’ Burgomeister House, on Breite Strasse in Lemgo is possibly the finest Weser Renaissance style building in all of Germany. It was built in 1568 and features an elegant façade with ‘Fall of Man’ above the doorway, and oriel windows featuring the Seven Cardinal Virtues masterpiece. Its name comes from a former owner, who sentenced 90 women to be killed as witches. Today the house is the City Museum with examples of torture instruments and accounts of the journeys of Lemgo resident Engelbert Kämpfer, who published accounts of his travels.
