Zeche Zollverein is a tourist area in the north of Essen which has been built up surrounding a disused mine which operated on the site from 1932 until 1986. It has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list for being the largest modern colliery in the world, and using Bauhaus architecture inspired buildings. The site offers tours into the mine, or the remodelled (by Lord Foster) boiler house. There are also recreation, accommodation and eating facilities on the site.
