The Town Hall, or Rathaus, in Essen is the largest and tallest one in Germany. It is a modern structure, built in the 1970s although not particularly attractive by today’s standards. It has 330,000 square meters of floor space inside, and rises 22 storeys above ground. The top floor is open to the public, with good views over the city and surrounding Ruhr region. Guided tours of the building are also available with prior arrangement.
