The main attraction in Fischbeck is its Stift and St. Johannis Stiftskirche. The Stift is a womens’ college and convent, founded in 955, and still inhabited by charitable elderly ladies today. The associated Stiftskirche was built in the 12th-13th centuries as a columned basilica. It sadly had many Baroque features removed during restoration in the 19th century, however items such as the wooden balconies still remain. The crypt and Gothic cloister are some of the best features of the complex. There are also plenty of works of religious art in the Stift, including a tapestry and statue of the foundress Helmburg.
