The State Opera House in Hannover is one of the most impressive architectural sights in the city. It was built from 1847-52 by George Ludwig Friedrich Laves, opening with a performance of Le Figaro on 5 September 1852. The Neo-Classical building has a façade of portico columns. Sadly it was almost completely destroyed in a bombing raid in June 1943. Rebuilding was commenced swiftly after the war, also remodelling the interior, and the first performance in November 1950.
