Römerberg is the heart of the old town of Frankfurt-am-Main and a good starting point when visiting the city. Römer, as it is known, is the site of the original Roman settlement from which Frankfurt grew. The Altest Rathaus (Old Town Hall) takes up one side of the square, whilst the timbered houses front the other. Many of the buildings have been rebuilt after World War 2 bombing devastated the old town. To the south is the Nikolaikirche, History Museum and the River, and to the north leads to the Zeil shopping area. In the centre is the Fountain of Justice, and the main Tourist Information Office is located here also.
