On the west side of Römerberg is Römer, a collection of 15th- to 18th century houses which comprise the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), Imperial Hall and New Town Hall (Rathaus). This complex, although largely reconstructed after war damage, are amongst the oldest standing in Frankfurt. The Imperial Hall was once the location of many banquets and ceremonies, including the coronations of many former Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire.
