Fritzlar’s Town Hall (Rathaus) is the oldest example in Germany which is still used for this purpose. It was, however, altered in the 19th century, but retains its half-timbering on the upper storey. Just past here is the Market Place (Marktplatz) – one of the most attractive in Germany. It is lined with some wonderful half timbered mansions and buildings, such as the former Gildehaus der Michaelsbruderschaft guildhall, dating from the 15th century. In the centre of the square is the Rolandsbrunnen statue.
